- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Horses, trains, and automobiles : Living in a dugout in the Oklahoma plains during Dust Bowl days was no picnic. After Melissa marries the richest man in the county, Pa and his wife Helen, along with his daughter Kathryn, sell their land to Melissa's father-in-law and start out for Helen's home in Indianapolis. A day or two into the journey, another dust storm blows over the land and Kathryn is separated from Pa & Helen. When the duster is over, Kathryn cannot find the truck, but soon finds fresh tracks where they left her and went on their way. So she sets out on her club foot to track them to Indiana. The story was excellent but I did not care for the parallel to the Wizard of Oz, just my personal dislike for that book & movie. On her trip she is both assisted and hindered by a brainless faux scientist, a heartless former Texas Ranger, and a cowardly railroad bum, utilizing a car, a horse, & a train. While Kathryn is on her adventure, Melissa is finding out she is married to an exceptionally cruel man who has sucked all the life out of the county residents and finally decides to murder Melissa. This is my first time to read Jennifer L. Wright, and I enjoyed it enough to try out some of her other books. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2021 )

Set in Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, it is a story of 2 sisters separated by marriage and moving away. This story is one that you won't want to put down! There is suspense, drama, and surprising plot twists. It is also enjoyable to pick out all of the correlations to "The Wizard of Oz", like characters' names, actions, and settings. Jennifer does a wonderful job making the reader feel that they are right there with the characters in the story, with her vivid descriptions and down-to-earth dialogue.
